Who is Rick Rubin?

Rick Rubin Biography.

Frederick Jay Rubin was born on March 10, 1963 and he was raised “in a loving Jewish environment” in adjacent Lido Beach after being born in Long Beach, New York. Frederick was raised by his mother Linda who is a homemaker, and his father Michael well-known as Mickey, who is a shoe wholesaler.

Frederick formed The Pricks with the assistance of a teacher after playing in a band with his boyhood pals Marc Greenhut, Carlos Ferreiro, and Joey Ferrante at garage and school gigs for neighbors. Their main claim to fame was getting booted off the stage at CBGB after just two songs for fighting with the heckling crowd; the fight was started by bandmates on orders to get the show stopped and generate publicity. Rubin’s father traveled from Nassau County, New York to Manhattan while dressed in his Long Beach auxiliary police uniform in an effort to “shut down” the show, despite the fact that he had no authority in New York City.

Rick Rubin Education Background.

While attending Long Beach High School, he made friends with Steve Freeman, the head of the school’s audiovisual department, who taught him how to play the guitar and write songs.

Rick Rubin Career.

Rubin established Def Jam Records with the use of the four-track recorder at his high school during his final year. He continued, encouraged by San Francisco’s Flipper, to create Hose. The inaugural release from Def Jam was a Hose track in 1982, a 45 rpm 7″ vinyl single packaged in an unlabeled brown paper bag.

The band played in and around the NYC punk scene, toured the Midwest and California, and played with seminal hardcore bands like Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü, Circle Jerks, Butthole Surfers, and Minor Threat, becoming friends with Fugazi frontman and Dischord Records owner Ian MacKaye. The band broke up in 1984 as Rubin’s passion moved towards the NYC hip hop scene.

Rubin began learning about hip hop production after becoming friends with DJ Jazzy Jay of Zulu Nation. The two released “It’s Yours” on Def Jam in 1983 after producing it for Bronx rapper T La Rock. On Baker’s Streetwise Records in 1984, producer Arthur Baker assisted with the record’s international distribution.

Jazzy Jay introduced Rubin to concert promoter/artist manager Russell Simmons in the Negril club, and Rubin explained he needed help getting Def Jam off the ground. Simmons and Rubin edged out Jazzy Jay and the official Def Jam record label was founded while Rubin was attending New York University in 1984. Their first record released was LL Cool J’s “I Need a Beat”.

Rubin continued to track down hip-hop artists from areas other than the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Harlem, such as Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island, which eventually resulted in Def Jam signing Public Enemy. Kate Schellenbach left the Beastie Boys as a result of Rubin’s influence, which led them away from their punk rock background and into rap.

1985’s “Rock Hard”/”Party’s Gettin’ Rough”/”Beastie Groove” EP by the Beastie Boys came out on the success of Rubin’s production work with breakthrough act Run-DMC, of which previous recordings were produced by Russell Simmons and Orange Krush’s musician Larry Smith. His productions were distinguished by the sporadically occurring fusion of hard rock and rap.

The Beastie Boys’ careers in mainstream hip hop were effectively launched by Rubin when he chose Adam Dubin and Ric Menello to co-direct the music videos for their songs “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)” and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.”

Sue Cummings, an editor at Spin magazine, had the idea to have Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith work together on a cover of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way.” This 1986 production is often credited with both introducing rap hard rock to mainstream ears and revitalising Aerosmith’s career.

In 1986, he worked with Aerosmith again on demos for their forthcoming album, but their collaboration ended early and resulted in only rough studio jams.

In the same year, Rubin began his long musical partnership with Slayer, producing Reign in Blood, considered a classic of the heavy metal genre. He had never previously used a metal band before.

In 1987, The Cult released their pivotal third album, Electric. Produced by Rubin, the album remains one of The Cult’s trademark and classic works. Rubin would eventually work with The Cult again on the single “The Witch”, in 1992. Rubin is listed as the soundtrack producer and music supervisor for the movie Less than Zero.

In the 1985 hip-hop movie Krush Groove, which was based on Russell Simmons’ early days as an artist manager and music producer, Rubin played a role that was based on himself.

Frederick later directed and featured with Ric Menello who is a second Run–D.M.C. film, Tougher than Leather in 1988.

In 1988, Rubin and Simmons went their separate ways after Rubin had a falling out with the then Def Jam president Lyor Cohen. Rubin left for Los Angeles to start Def American Records, while Simmons persisted at Def Jam in New York.

In Los Angeles, Rubin signed a number of rock and heavy metal acts, including Danzig, Masters of Reality, The Four Horsemen, and Wolfsbane, as well as substitute rock group The Jesus and Mary Chain and stand-up comedian Andrew Dice Clay.

Rubin signed the Geto Boys and he continued to work with Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and Run-D.M.C., among others, despite the fact that his work at this time was mostly concentrated on rock and metal.

“Def American Recordings” was the original moniker Rubin gave to his new record company. When Rubin learned that the word “def” had been included in the official dictionary in 1993, he organized a funeral for it complete with a casket, a burial, celebrity mourners, and a eulogy by The Reverend Al Sharpton. American Recordings replaced Def American.

Rubin was appointed as the co-head of Columbia Records in May 2007. Minutes to Midnight, Linkin Park’s 2007 album, was co-produced by Rubin and Mike Shinoda. Since then, Rubin and Shinoda have worked together to co-produce the band’s albums A Thousand Suns from 2010 and Living Things from June 2012.

In 2006, albums by Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Green Day, and others were released. Rubin received the honor once more in 2009 for his production work with Weezer, Metallica, Neil Diamond, Ours, and Jakob Dylan in 2008.

For his work with the Dixie Chicks, Rubin earned the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, in 2007.
