The original members of Bring Me the Horizon came from a variety of metal and rock musical backgrounds. Oliver Sykes and Matt Nicholls used to go to local hardcore punk shows and shared a love of American metalcore bands like Norma Jean and Skycamefalling.
Lee Malia, who had previously played in a Metallica tribute band before the two met him, later spoke with them about melodic death metal and thrash metal bands like Metallica and At the Gates. When the members of Bring Me the Horizon first came together in March 2004, they ranged in age from 15 to 17. On drums, Sykes, Malia, and Nicholls were joined by Curtis Ward, a local of Rotherham. The lineup was completed by bassist Matt Kean, who played in other local bands.
