Alan Cumming was born on January 27, 1965, however Cunning was born and raised in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. Cumming’s father is Alex Cumming, who was the head forester of Panmure Estate, which is situated close to Carnoustie on the east coast of Scotland, and is where Cumming grew up. Cumming’s mother is Mary Darling, who worked as an insurance company secretary. Cumming has described the environment as “feudal”. In 1992, Cumming made his feature film debut in Ian Sellar’s Prague, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and where he won the Best Actor prize at the Atlantic Film Festival in addition to a Scottish BAFTA Best Actor nomination.

He also went on tours with Borderline, Theatre Workshop, and Glasgow Citizens’ TAG. Conquest of the South Pole, an Edinburgh production of 1988 that later moved to the Royal Court in London and won him an Olivier Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer, featured him as Slupianek. Later, he performed in plays with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bristol Old Vic, and he played Valere in La Bete at the Lyric in Hammersmith, London.

In the Richard Curtis-plotted Christmas 1991 BBC comedy Bernard and the Genie, in which he costarred with Lenny Henry and Rowan Atkinson, he had his breakout performance as Bernard Bottle. On the well-known UK television program Blind Date in 1993, he also made an appearance in a comic relief piece with Rowan Atkinson portraying Mr. Bean.

Cumming also featured in the movie with Sandrine Bonnaire and Bruno Ganz. In the 1995 Irish film Circle of Friends, he was first seen by American audiences playing the smarmy Sean Walsh, an unwanted suitor of Minnie Driver’s character. He portrayed Boris Ivanovih Grishenko in the 1995 James Bond movie GoldenEye as well. He also portrayed Mr. Elton in the 1996 film Emma.

In 1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, featuring Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, he made his American debut as Sandy Frink. Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut (1996), had Cumming in a small role as a hotel clerk who amusingly flirts with Tom Cruise’s character; according to Cumming, he had to go through six auditions for the part. Together with her friend and former Cabaret co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cumming Co-Wrote, Co-Directed, Co-Produced, and Co-Starred in the ensemble movie The Anniversary Party in 2001.

In 1995, Cumming went on to act in the BBC2 comedy The High Life as flight attendant Sebastian Flight. Together with co-star Forbes Masson, Cumming continued their acting and writing collaboration that began when they were both in theater school. Cumming made an appearance in Ghosts in 1995 as well.

Cumming made a comeback to British television in 2011 by playing the Crossdresser Desrae on the Sky series The Runaway. Moreover, he has produced a number of documentaries, including My Brilliant Britain about Scottish humour, The Real Cabaret about Weimar cabaret performers, and Who Do You Think You Are? for the BBC in 2010, where he learned that his paternal grandfather was a war hero who had died playing Russian roulette.

He received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance in 1991 for his performance as The Madman in Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist, a Royal National Theatre production from 1990. Along with the playwright Tim Supple, he also modified the script.

Cumming won the TMA Best Actor Award and received high praise from critics for his performance as Hamlet in the English Touring Theatre’s production of the play that same year. Cumming also performed The Master of Ceremonies in Sam Mendes’ 1993 London West End revival of the musical Cabaret opposite Jane Horrocks as Sally Bowles.

For Best Actor in a Musical, he was nominated for an Olivier Award. In 1998, he performed in the Mendes-Rob Marshall Broadway revival in the same capacity, this time paired with Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles. For his performance, he received three awards: a Tony, a Drama Desk, and an Outer Critics Circle.
